Dave Toschi, who hunted and was haunted by the Zodiac serial killer, dies at 86

The letter arrived at the San Francisco Chronicle in April 1978, appearing much like some two-dozen others the paper had received over the previous decade. Its handwriting was slanted, lacking capitalization, and it was signed with a symbol that resembled the crosshairs of a gun.

“This is the Zodiac speaking,” it began. “That city pig toschi is good but I am smarter and better he will get tired then leave me alone. I am waiting for a good movie about me. who will play me.”

The letter puzzled handwriting experts, many of whom said it was a fake, but its target was all too real. For nearly nine years, San Francisco police detective Dave Toschi had led one of the most widely covered murder investigations in American history, searching after a man who called himself the Zodiac and claimed to have killed 37 people.

In fact, authorities said the Zodiac

Zodiac serial killer who has evaded police for 50 years could finally be caught

The Zodiac Killer is one of the great unsolved serial killer mysteries of all time. He operated in North California in the late 60s, and wrote to newspapers claiming he had killed 37.

Even though police investigated 2,500 suspects, the case was never solved as forensic technology was not advanced enough to tie anyone conclusively to the crime.

But now a new team are examining the evidence and there is a high hopes that cutting edge forensic technology may finally blow open a case which has puzzled detectives for decades.

In a spree of heinous attacks the killer sent taunting letters to authorities, some containing ciphers filled with mystifying combinations of letters and symbols.

One cipher in particular, known as the Z340, has baffled the greatest minds in cryptology for nearly 50 years—and it continues to draw scrutiny because the Zodiac killer claimed this code contained his real name.

The infamous

‘Zodiac:’ Movie location map of David Fincher’s serial killer masterpiece

From 1997’s The Game to 2010’s The Social Network, noted auteur David Fincher has had a fixation with the Bay Area. Turning ten this year, Zodiac, which only pulled in $33 million in the United States on a $65 million budget, remains arguably his best film to date. Chronicling the 1970s killing spree of the person christened the Zodiac Killer, based on the cryptogram letters sent to local media, the movie features several key Bay Area locales.

The Chronicle building, the Castro Theatre, and Original Joe’s area all featured. The most harrowing among them, Lake Berryessa. The scene where victims Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard are stabbed during a quiet and sunny afternoon is one of cinema’s most terrifying.

While some of the movie was shot in Toronto, most of it was filmed right here in the Bay Area. We’ve identified several locations. Enjoy.

David Fincher is returning to TV—and to “Zodiac” territory—with a Netflix serial-killer drama

Yesterday (March 1), Netflix dropped the first teaser for Mindhunter, an upcoming TV series about FBI agents in the 1970s who interview convicted serial killers to help solve ongoing cases. If that’s not intriguing enough, David Fincher, the modern master of the thriller, is producing the series and will direct multiple episodes.

Mindhunter marks Fincher’s first time back on the small screen since he helped create Netflix’s House of Cards in 2013 (he also directed the political drama’s first two episodes). The time period, plot line, and aesthetics of Mindhunter should remind Fincher fans of his brilliant 2007 film Zodiac, about a serial killer who terrorized northern California in the 1960s and 70s.

The Netflix series stars Jonathan Groff (who starred in HBO’s Looking and has played King George III in the Broadway hit Hamilton), Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv. Actress Charlize Theron serves as an executive producer alongside Fincher.

Based on the
