The Werewolf killings: Russia’s serial killer cop on trial for 59 more murders

Mikhail Popkov, 53, appeared in court in the Siberian city of Irkutsk after confessing to 59 additional murders and one attempted killing between 1992 and 2010, Interfax news agency reported.

He is already serving a life sentence after being convicted in 2015 of raping and killing 22 women, and the attempted murder of two more.

Popkov killed his victims after offering them rides late at night, sometimes in a police car, while he was off-duty around his home city of Angarsk near Irkutsk.

He has been nicknamed “the werewolf” and the “Angarsk maniac” by Russian media.

If convicted of 81 murders, he would exceed the total number of people killed by notorious figures like “chessboard killer” Alexander Pichushkin who killed 48, and Andrei Chikatilo, who was convicted of 52 Soviet-era murders.

At Wednesday hearing, which was closed to the media to avoid making public details of the sexual nature of his alleged attacks, prosecutors read

A former Russian police officer who was sentenced to life in prison for the killings of 22 women is on trial again, charged with murdering 60 more women.

The second trial of convicted serial killer Mikhail Popkov, 53, began at the Irkutsk regional court in southeastern Siberia on January 10.

The judge announced the charges against Popkov and adjourned the trial until January 15, also ruling that the hearings will be held behind closed doors.

Popkov, a former police officer from the nearby city of Angarsk, was arrested in 2012 after a series of DNA tests linked him to rapes and murders of three women in 1997. He later confessed to killing more women, the authorities said.

In January 2015, Popkov was found guilty of the murder of 22 women and the attempted murder of two women between 1994-2000, and was sentenced to life in prison.

Trial of accused serial killer Shawn Grate delayed until next year

ASHLAND – Suspected serial killer Shawn Grate will have to wait until next year for his day in court.

Grate’s trial was moved from Nov. 6 to April 9 on Monday. Ashland County Common Pleas Judge Ron Forsthoefel granted a defense motion to continue the trial to give two expert witnesses more time to prepare.

Prosecutor Chris Tunnell did not object to the motion from Robert and Rolf Whitney.

“To not grant it would create a review situation at some appellate level,” he said, “and we’d be back here doing it all over again.”

Grate, 41, is charged with 23 counts. Those include aggravated murder in connection with the deaths of two women. If convicted, he could get the death penalty.

The Whitneys referred specifically to mitigation specialist James Crates, who would
