From ghost tours, to books, Halloween costumes to theatre productions – and even a museum – the Jack the Ripper industry is well and truly alive.

His is the name given to the unidentified serial killer who was believed to be responsible for a number of murders in and around the Whitechapel district of London between 1888 and 1891. It was during this period that the lives of Mary Ann Nichols (Polly), Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly were so brutally ended.

Known as the Whitechapel Murders, the killings saw an unsubstantiated number of female sex workers murdered by an unknown assailant[s]. At various points, some or all of these unsolved murders have been attributed to the notorious “Jack the Ripper”.

Were HH Holmes, the serial killer, and Jack the Ripper the same person?

For decades, not only police authorities but the public were baffled by the heinous crimes committed by Herman Mudgett, a.k.a. Dr. H.H. Holmes, who was touted to be America’s first serial killer. No one knows for sure how many lives he took but it is believed that he was responsible for killing as many as 200 people in the late 19th century. According to reports, the crowning achievement of what was described as a “con man, opportunist and evil genius” was the construction of a building later dubbed as the Murder Castle, “a hotel on Chicago’s south side that he engineered to be a factory of death, complete with a gas chamber, a dissection room, trap doors and a basement furnace to destroy any trace of his sinister work.”

At the same time, across the Atlantic, a killer was terrorizing the streets of London, murdering and mutilating at least five victims

From lonely weakling to the Yorkshire Ripper: How serial killer Peter Sutcliffe developed his murderous hatred

When Peter Sutcliffe killed his first victim, bashing her over the head with a hammer and slashing and stabbing at her body, he got away with it.

As Sutcliffe continued to evade police he continued to kill , building up a body count of 13 women over the course of five years.

His hatred for women appeared to increase with every murder as panic grew over the serial killer dubbed the Yorkshire Ripper .

At first Sutcliffe targeted women working as prostitutes in the red light districts of Yorkshire before extending his range, but always using the same method of a hammer and knife.

Experts believe his hatred of women was triggered by interactions with females throughout his life, and an upbringing that gave him a conflicted view of the opposite sex.

Sutcliffe is serving 20 concurrent life sentences for murdering 13 women and attempting to

‘American Ripper’: DNA Reveals Identity of Body Found in H.H. …

After more than a century of speculation, the question surrounding who was buried in H.H. Holmes’ grave has finally been answered.

In the season finale of the History Channel’s ‘American Ripper’ series, an investigation into whether H.H. Holmes, born Herman Webster Mudgett, was also Jack the Ripper, Holmes’ grandson Jeff Mudgett compares the DNA found in Holmes’ grave to his own.

Holmes, the murderer believed to have terrorized Chicago during the 1893 World’s Fair, confessed to over two dozen murders, though some believe the body count is much higher

What is undisputed is that Holmes operated a building at 63rd and Wallace. The so-called “murder castle” is said to have been equipped with gas chambers, hallways to nowhere, even a crematory.

When Holmes was finally arrested in Philadelphia, newspaper reports at the time indicated he may have pulled off one final swindle – escaping death
