The Hessle Road serial killer released from prison to murder again

It is a tale which can scarcely be believed.

A serial killer based in Hull who was released from prison after every one of his murders – but just went on to kill again.

The story sounds more like one you’d come across in a book, or in a Hollywood film.

But William Burkitt’s killings were very much based in reality – and haunted Hessle Road for decades.

Here, local historian Mike Covell talks to David Spereall through the life of William Burkitt – including his hitherto unknown background.

Early life and his first victim

William Burkitt, who went on to become one of the most feared names in Hull, was born to his mother, Mary Ann, and his father, William Sr, in Hessle Road in 1887.

After his father’s tragic death when William was still a teenager, the youngster devoted his life to the seas and worked on a number of Hull-based trawlers.

Serial Killer William Devin Howell Gets Life in Prison – People

The Connecticut serial killer who drove a “murder mobile” and buried his victims in what he called “his garden” was sentenced on Friday to life in prison for his crimes, PEOPLE confirms.

New Britain, Connecticut, Superior Court Judge Joan K. Alexander handed down the six life terms — or 360 years in prison — for William Devin Howell, a court clerk tells PEOPLE.

Howell, a drifter who is believed to be the most prolific killer in Connecticut history, pleaded guilty in September to murdering six people in 2003, the Associated Press reports.

His victims, whom he killed over a six-month period, were identified as Melanie Ruth Camilini, Diane Cusack, Marilyn Mendez Gonzalez, Joyvaline Martinez, Mary Jane Menard, Danny Lee Whistnant.

At the time of his arrest, Howell was already serving a 15-year prison sentence for manslaughter in the death of a seventh victim, Nilsa Arizmendi, who disappeared in July 2003 from a grocery store

Serial killer says he hopes his "slow, painful death in prison" will comfort families

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. —  An East Coast drifter who killed seven people in Connecticut in 2003 and drove a van he called the “murder mobile” was sentenced Friday to life in prison.

A state judge handed down six consecutive life sentences to William Devin Howell during an emotional hearing where victims’ relatives spoke about how the killings devastated their lives. Howell pleaded guilty to murder charges in September.

“He stripped away the youth from us and made me and my brother orphans,” said Tiffany Menard, daughter of victim Mary Jane Menard.

She called Howell a “monster” and said she tried to kill herself two times after her mother disappeared.

Howell is believed to be the most prolific serial killer in Connecticut history – not counting mass shootings. The seven killings topped the Connecticut body count of serial killer Michael Ross, who killed six women in eastern Connecticut and two in

Serial killer Rose West ‘could die in prison after being stricken with mystery illness’

Serial killer Rose West has been stricken with a serious illness which could be fatal, sources suggest.

The notorious murderer, who took the lives of 12 people, is said to be undergoing treatment in the medical centre at HMP Low Newton, Co Durham.

The Daily Star reports an unnamed source as saying: “She is very ill. Her medical records are closely guarded, and she has a very small circle of staff and fellow inmates in jail, so hardly anyone knows exactly what’s wrong with her.

“But the rumour is that it’s very serious, and could even finish her off.

“West’s life is planned to the letter, because her notoriety makes her very vulnerable to attacks from fellow inmates.

“It also means that when she requires medical attention or prescribed drugs, the

Would-be serial killer sentenced to 18 years in prison

EVERETT — An Edmonds woman who lured a man to a motel room with plans to cut out his heart and eat it was sentenced Tuesday to 18 years in prison.

The victim fought for his life inside the Lynnwood motel room as the knife-wielding stranger he met on Craigslist straddled him and informed him she was a serial killer. Amy Brown, a dog groomer who lived with her parents, stabbed the man in the chest with a pocket knife. She lunged at him several more times before he pushed her off the bed, running for his life. He survived the Jan. 29 encounter.

Police later would find a life-sized coffin in Brown’s bedroom, along with a journal outlining her plans to become a serial killer and drawings for what she dubbed a “murder shack.” She repeated her plans to the cops — “I decided I wanted to become a serial killer
