Why Baton Rouge man suspected of killing 2 black men might see his fate greatly impacted by law change

A state law that took effect in 2009 making it easier to subject serial killers to the death penalty could have a profound impact on Kenneth James Gleason, the Baton Rouge man who was booked Tuesday on first-degree murder counts in a pair of unrelated fatal shootings last week.

East Baton Rouge Parish prosecutors sought the change to the first-degree murder statute after reputed Baton Rouge serial killer Sean Vincent Gillis was convicted in 2008 of first-degree murder. The jury deadlocked on the death penalty, and Gillis was sentenced to life in prison.

First-degree murder, which is punishable by death in capital cases, requires an aggravating circumstance, such as murdering someone while committing another crime like armed robbery or killing someone under the age of 12.

Prosecutors complained to state lawmakers after the Gillis trial that serial killers often murder without committing another aggravating crime.

Senate Bill 132, pushed by East Baton Rouge prosecutors

Serial Killer Fan Nathaniel Sebastian Arrested For Killing Mom …

An Alabama man is accused of murder after authorities found a 55-gallon drum containing a female body buried under his porch, Inside Edition reports.

“OK, my mama’s under the porch. Y’all got me,” Nathaniel Sebastian, 32, allegedly said to deputies who went to the house with a search warrant after his mother went missing.

Sebastian was charged with murder, abuse of a corpse, and promoting prison contraband after police found a homemade handcuff key in his mouth during booking.

Though police have not formally identified the corpse, Sebastian’s mother, Susan Mayo, 60, was reported missing June 17 by her other children.

She lived with Sebastian, who was reportedly a big fan of John Wayne Gacy, an Illinois serial killer who buried his victims under his house. Gacy was executed in 1994 after being found responsible for dozens of murders.

Sebastian had talked about Gacy on Facebook and even discussed the serial killer with a

Serial killer may be tied to young woman’s 1983 cold case killing in …

A serial killer may have killed a young woman found dead in western New York nearly 34 years ago, according to a report Tuesday.

Cold case investiators with the New York State Police are probing suspected serial killer Christopher Wilder in the death of Shari Lynne Ball in 1983 in Shelby, the Buffalo News reports.

Her naked, badly decomposed body was found in October, 1983. She was reported missing four months earlier in Boca Raton, Fla., where she lived.

State police troopers said Tuesday that Ball had told her family she was going to New York State with an unknown friend to pursue a modeling career.

Her body was identified in 2014 through DNA. Until then she was listed as “Jane Doe.”

Wilder, called the “Beauty Queen Killer,” targeted attractive young women, offering to help them find modeling jobs, and then raping and killing them, the Buffalo paper reported.

“It’s a possibility that absolutely

‘There’s no one out there killing these kids’ found in the water …

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans on Tuesday batted down Internet speculation that there’s a serial killer out there killing young men and dumping them in bodies of water in and around the city.

Appearing on WGBH’s “Boston Public Radio” show, Evans responded to a caller who asked about young men who have been found dead in the water. Alcohol is the culprit, Evans said, calling their deaths a tragedy.

Evans said he deploys detectives to check bars, especially in the downtown area, for over-serving customers. The detectives also seek to educate bar employees about watching for people’s safety as they leave the establishment, according to the commissioner.

“There’s no one out there killing these kids,” Evans said. “We gotta educate the kids, especially if they’re not from the city. They shouldn’t be taking shortcuts to the train station or leaving their friends.”

Evans added, “Friends gotta be good friends and not let their friends wander

Sarra Gilbert Convicted of Killing Mother in Upstate NY

The sister of a woman who is a key figure in the Long Island Serial Killer case was convicted of killing her 52-year-old mother in upstate New York last year.

An Ulster County jury found Sarra Gilbert guilty Thursday of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of her mother, Mari Gilbert. Another one of Mari’s daughters, Shannon Gilbert, disappeared from Oak Beach seven years ago, leading to the discovery of 10 sets of human remains along Ocean Parkway.

Authorities have said that Sarra stabbed her mother, Mari, to death inside Sarra’s Ellenville home following an argument in July of 2016.

Sarra’s attorney is John Ray, who is also representing the Gilberts in a lawsuit against the Suffolk County Police Department, who the family blames for not preventing Shannon’s death when she called 911 on the night she went missing.

At Sarra’s trial, Ray argued that Sarra was not guilty by reason of
