A killer escaped in Hawaii and flew to California — then got caught after hailing a cab

Randall Saito is taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies in Stockton, Calif. (San Joaquin Sheriff’s Office)

A manipulative “psychopathic predator” who Hawaiian prosecutors said has “all the criteria of a classic serial killer” was arrested Wednesday, four days after escaping from a mental hospital on Oahu, chartering a plane to a neighboring island and flying commercial to California.

The “violent psychopath” in question is Randall Toshio Saito, who has called the Hawaii State Hospital home for nearly four decades, according to police.

He was arrested by deputies in San Joaquin County, Calif. — about 2,500 miles from Oahu — after “an alert taxi cab driver” called police, the sheriff’s office said.

In 1979, Saito shot Sandra Yamashiro in the face with a pellet gun, then stabbed her to death, according to Time magazine. He had never met the woman before and

Escaped Psychiatric Patient, Once Described as a Classic Serial Killer, Could Be in California

(HONOLULU) — A man acquitted of a 1979 murder by reason of insanity escaped from a Hawaii psychiatric hospital over the weekend, took a taxi to a chartered plane in Honolulu bound for the island of Maui and then boarded another plane to San Jose, California, police said.

Randall Saito, believed to be in Northern California, is considered extremely dangerous and should not be approached, Honolulu police said late Tuesday.

Saito left the state hospital outside Honolulu on Sunday at 10 a.m. and didn’t return, police said. Hospital staff called 911 to report his disappearance shortly after 7:30 p.m. — two hours after he landed in San Jose, police said. An all-points bulletin was issued at 8:30 p.m.

It wasn’t immediately known how he was able to charter a plane. Police wouldn’t provide details about his flight to California.

The FBI and U.S. Marshals Service have reviewed security footage from San Jose International Airport

Search on for suspected serial killer who escaped from psychiatric hospital in Hawaii

HONOLULU — Hawaii authorities were searching Tuesday for a man described by a prosecutor as fitting the profile of a serial killer who escaped from the state’s psychiatric hospital outside Honolulu and flew to Maui.

Randall Saito, who was found not guilty of a 1979 murder by reason of insanity, left Hawaii State Hospital Sunday.

Maui County police said the 59-year-old Saito flew to Maui, but they didn’t know where he was.

“He is a very dangerous individual,” said Wayne Tashima, a Honolulu prosecutor who argued in 2015 against Saito receiving passes to leave the hospital grounds without an escort.

Tashima warned people not to approach Saito, saying there’s a concern he could commit the same “very heinous and violent offense” again. Authorities asked anyone with information on Saito to call police.

Saito was committed to the hospital in 1981 after being acquitted by reason of insanity of the murder of Sandra Yamashiro. She

A Psychiatric Patient Once Described as a Classic Serial Killer Has Just Escaped

(HONOLULU) — Hawaii authorities on Tuesday were searching for a man who escaped from the state’s psychiatric hospital outside Honolulu and flew to Maui.

Randall Saito, who was found not guilty of a 1979 murder by reason of insanity, left the Hawaii State Hospital at 9 a.m. Sunday and failed to return.

Maui County police said Saito flew to Maui shortly after he left the hospital, but they didn’t know where he was.

The 59-year-old is 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall and 220 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Saito was committed to the hospital in 1981. He was acquitted by reason of insanity of the murder of Sandra Yamashiro, whom he shot and stabbed repeatedly at a Honolulu shopping mall.

Defense attorneys sought to have him released in 2000. But prosecutors objected, saying Saito fit the criteria of a classic serial killer.

A 2002 article by the Honolulu Advertiser reported Saito picked his

Serial Killer’s Remains Exhumed Amid Rumors He Escaped Execution

(PHILADELPHIA) — Tests show that the remains in a suburban Philadelphia grave are indeed those of a 19th century serial killer, quelling rumors that he’d conned his way out of execution and escaped from prison.A judge approved the exhumation of Dr. H.H. Holmes’ grave earlier this year. Descendants requested it for a series called “American Ripper” on the History Channel. Part of the show looked at whether Holmes escaped, and scientists’ findings were revealed in this week’s final episode.

Holmes, the pseudonym of New Hampshire-born physician Herman Webster Mudgett, is believed to have killed an undetermined number people at his hotel of horrors during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. It featured a bizarre labyrinth of windowless rooms, secret passageways, false floors, trapdoors and a vault. Most of the rooms had gas vents that
