Anne Arundel judge: ‘manipulative serial killer’ deserved a tougher sentence

Christopher Scheibe’s attorneys painted the picture of a man born into a volatile situation.

The son of a prominent former attorney for Anne Arundel County, the 29-year-old man sat in an oversized jumpsuit and listened quietly Wednesday as his attorneys detailed his long history of mental illness and being abandoned by his parents. Scheibe, convicted of stabbing two young women to death in 2012 and 2016, made bizarre statements to police after his arrest that resulted in a psychological evaluation.

“One can’t help but stand here and wonder ‘Could something have been done?’” defense attorney Tiffany Holley said.

Circuit Court Judge Paul F. Harris Jr. was having none of it. He dismissed arguments that mental illness was a significant factor in Scheibe’s murder of Holly Carol Smith, 24, of Dundalk and Jessica Lynn Lee, 20, of Brooklyn Park.

Anne Arundel Judge: ‘homicidal, manipulative serial killer’ deserved a tougher sentence

A Southern Maryland man was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to two murders dating back to 2012.

During a hearing Wednesday before Circuit Court Judge Paul F. Harris Jr. in Annapolis, Christopher Allen Scheibe, 29, apologized for stabbing Holly Carol Smith, 24, of Dundalk, and Jessica Lynn Lee, 20, of Brooklyn Park to death.

Harris showed no sympathy for Scheibe, calling him a “homicidal, manipulative serial killer.” He dismissed arguments by Scheibe’s attorneys that mental illness was a significant factor in the two killings.

“He knew enough to be a very dangerous person,” Harris said. “If I had it my way, this gentleman would never see the light of day.”
