In the basement of his home on the east side of Indianapolis, Bill Bruton picks up a three-ring binder from the pool table and leafs through the pages.

The handwritten letters, cards and drawings carefully tucked into protective sleeves are reminders of what Bruton describes as a 27-year relationship with a man many have called evil incarnate, a man who was one of America’s most notorious and enigmatic mass murderers.

What It’s Like to Be Friends with a Serial Killer

All photos courtesy of M. William Phelps and Kensington Press

In Silence of the Lambs, Jody Foster’s character, Clarice Starling,  becomes entangled in a weird and oddly personal relationship with Hannibal Lecter, Anthony Hopkins’ iconic, homicidal psychopath. In September of 2011 award-winning journalist M. William Phelps embarked on a similar endeavor. He started a relationship with Canadian serial killer Keith “Happy Face” Jesperson, giving him a platform on his show Investigation Discovery series Dark Minds, which focused on unsolved homicide cases thought to be the work of serial killers. Jesperson claimed to have murdered nearly 200 individuals, though only nine have been confirmed. He got his nickname due to the smiley face doodles he’d ultimately include on his confession letters, following his arrest in 1995. Phelps used Jesperson as a consultant on the show, allowing him to get into the mind of a serial killer in hopes that

iZombie Round Table: Cleyton and Bliv FTW!

On iZombie Season 3 Episode 10, Ravi found himself in the crosshairs of Harley and the zombie truthers when he put his life on the line to save Don E.

Blaine and Liv teamed up to save their friends. Liv finally got closure after seeing the ghost of Drake while on Weckler brain. Peyton and Clive worked the Weckler case together, and Major’s new girlfriend raised suspicion.

Join Allison Nichols, Amanda Steinmetz, Yana Grebenyuk, and Jim Garner as they discuss the shocking cliffhanger.

Izombie Round Table

Did you like that they addressed Liv losing herself in brains to deal with her Drake grief?

Allison: I was really happy that Liv recognized that she was jumping brain to brain, barely spending time in her own skull. I’m glad she got closure, and I loved seeing Drake again. I didn’t realize how much I missed him. Hopefully, we’ll get back to seeing more of Liv-Liv now.

I’m Pen Pals With a Convicted Murderer. Help!

I’m Pen Pals With a Convicted Murderer. Help!

Dear Willie D:

I started writing a convicted murderer out of boredom and curiosity. He actually killed three people at different times, so technically he’s a serial killer, the youngest in our state. I’m a 20-year-old male college student, and he’s 22. I find it fascinating that someone so close to me in age could be so damaged internally so young.

He has never asked me for money, or anything, and we don’t discuss his crimes. For my birthday, he sent me some drawings that he did. He signs his drawings with a peace symbol. In the three years that we’ve been pen pals, I have visited him six times, once with my girlfriend. We write each other two times a month, and he never miss [sic] sending Christmas cards to me and my family.

With each letter or card, I

iZombie is straining under the weight of too much plot

Season three of iZombie may have finally hit the point where there is officially too much going on to track. There are only three episodes until the end of the season, but instead of things feeling like they are wrapping up more story beats are being introduced every week. With all of these plots both new and old it’s getting harder and harder to tell what is happening, let alone how they all fit together.

The key story making this season feel more and more complicated throughout the past few episodes is the James Weckler story and what exactly happened to him and the dominatrix he killed. Instead of having a traditional case of the week, this episode featured Liv eating the blue juice-soaked brains of Weckler in an attempt to help Peyton figure out why her case against him kept coming out wonky at every turn. What Liv and

The Racing Driver Who Cut Off Her Breasts And Aided The Nazis, Explained

A while back, I wrote about the very conflicting story of Violette Morris, a cyclecar racer in the 1920s who was so insanely hardcore she had her breasts removed so she could fit into her cramped race cars better. She’s a fascinating person, but also something of a monster who ended up murdering people for the Gestapo. Not an easy story, but one that’s hard to ignore. And now she’s the subject of the very first video of our new Jalopnik Explains series.

Thanks to the fantastic work of Gizmodo’s in-house animator Elisa Solinas, Morris’ alternately inspiring and yet deeply disturbing story has been made into this short animated film.

Morris was a skilled racing driver and athlete in her day,

The True Story Behind the Horrific Murder Spree That Inspired ‘Scream’

But authorities had more than their suspicions to support them. For one thing, Rolling was actually a suspect in another murder back in Shreveport. In November 1989, Julie Grissom, her father Tom, and her son Sean had all been stabbed to death in a manner very similar to the Gainesville deaths. The killer had posed their bodies, too, in similar ways to the Gainesville victims. Rolling was, in other words, an even more perfect suspect. And he’d been right there, the whole time, while the police focused on Humphrey.

In Ocala, he crashed a car as he tried to flee authorities. That was how they got him, just a week or so after the murders. In fact, just a day after the last killing, the police had chased Rolling to his campsite in the woods, where they found bloodied clothing. They also found dollar bills stained with theft-resistant dye. And

The ACLU Will Go to War with Trump if He Becomes President

On Thursday, the ACLU, America’s most prominent civil liberties organization, made it clear that while they’re nonpartisan, they would definitely, definitely battle the policies of a hypothetical Donald Trump presidency.

A collection of legal memos spells out that in a bit more detail, challenging several of the Republican nominee’s policy proposals. They cite numerous conflicts with the Constitution, as well as other legal objections, and make it clear that ACLU lawyers would wrap many of Trump policies in legal red tape if they were ever enacted.

Issues that the ACLU would challenge a hypothetical President Trump on include the “temporary” ban on Muslim immigration and the surveillance of Muslim communities, the deportation of 11 million or more undocumented immigrants, the reinstatement of torture, and the redefinition of libel laws to
