Police, DA have never forgotten unsolved homicides

FAIRHAVEN — Just because someone has gotten away with murder for many years doesn’t mean it’s been forgotten or that justice will never be served.

Take for example the guilty verdict in February against Robert Roy of Acushnet for the 1986 murder of his wife. That murder was solved after the body was found and witnesses came forward.

District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter’s Unsolved Homicide Unit was instrumental in solving the Roy case. This unit has also broughwt charges or convictions in eight unsolved homicides since it was established in January 2007.

Asked about unsolved homicides in Fairhaven, Det. Sgt. Michael Botelho said two came to mind, the brutal beating and strangulation of Mary D. Silveira in 1976 and the murder of Joseph Charles Mello in 1989. The cases are documented in a “cold case” file in Fairhaven’s Police Department.
